Located on the base of its own mountain in Canaan, Connecticut, Mountainside Treatment Center is a beautiful, serene, and transformative drug and alcohol treatment facility.
Providing an idyllic environment for a long-term recovery, Mountainside Treatment Center offers an intensive and structured treatment model that includes detoxification and rehabilitation.
The facility is staffed with a complete medical team of professionals who ensure the safety and comfort of patients.
Upon arrival, patients go through assessment at the new detox center. To ease withdrawal symptoms, nurses are available 24/7 to provide a combination of pharmaceutical and holistic treatments.
The 28-day residential treatment program’s goal is to heal the body, mind, and spirit by supplementing traditional treatment methodologies with alternative and holistic therapies. These traditional treatment methodologies include an introduction to the 12-steps, individual and group counseling, but also gender-specific programming, relapse prevention, and addiction education. Among the most-used evidence-based practices are CBT, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and more. Family counseling is also available, and families regularly attend multi-day family workshops.
Furthermore, patients also engage in a wide range of supplementing activities including yoga, meditation, sweat lodge ceremonies, acupuncture, positional therapy, and qigong. There are also the quasi-mandatory “Change in Action” trips where adventure therapists lead clients into the woods to help improve self-esteem, interpersonal skills, and spiritual awareness. One alum shares his thoughts about the outdoor activities saying, “A hiking/camping weekend that allows for more intimate sharing with a small group and also lots of reflection time in the beautiful wilderness surrounding Mountainside.”
In addition, Mountainside Treatment Center offers an Intensive Outpatient Program and general outpatient care. In addition, there is a 12-week IOP available for adolescents ages 15 to 17. Parents can also enroll in a parallel 12-week family program. This program combines education about addiction, training in coping skills and refusal strategies with individual, group, and family counseling.

Strengths: Updated rooms, dining hall, common areas; Relaxed, pleasant surroundings free from outside distractions; extended care includes employment in facility-run restaurant. Weaknesses: Treatment of co-occurring conditions; extended care program does not include comprehensive transition plan for after care. – C.G
Mountainside is a for-profit business and they do not care about the increasing problem of addiction. Moreover, they treat patients as commodities to line their own pocket. Anyone can work the program but it would be nice if it were a program worth working. – L.C
When I first arrived I was very nervous and I kept thinking what have I done, 3weeks later, I was clean! It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done! With all the love from staff and people in detox, I got through, day by day! It was like a family! Everyone was so kind and caring! Best thing I’ve ever done for ME? – P.S
